Fatty liver disease is the condition where there is fat accumulated for more than 5-10% of the liver weight. Most fat comes in the form of Triglyceride that causes liver inflammation and liver fascia, which would further develop into cirrhosis of the liver. Once the symptom develops into cirrhosis of the liver, it cannot be cured by any medicine or medical treatment. The only way to stabilize the symptom and lessen the amount of accumulated fat is to take care of your health according to the doctor’s advice.

Fatty liver disease can be divided into two types, as follows:

  1. Alcoholic fatty liver disease, also called alcoholic steatohepatitis: this type of fatty liver disease is caused by excessive intake of alcohol to the stage that the liver cannot function properly.
  2. Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD): this type of fatty liver disease occurs from the malfunction of metabolism such as obesity, diabetes, hypercholesterolemia, etc.

The symptom of fatty liver disease usually does not show at first stage, but usually when the fat accumulates in a liver up to a certain stage. Most common symptoms are tiredness, exhaustion, weight loss, nauseous, vomit, pain under right rib, and dark urine.

How could we know if we have fatty liver disease?

  1. Get a complete blood count (CBC), liver function tests (LFT), hemoglobin A1c or glycated hemoglobin test (HbA1C) and Lipid Profile Test, as it is common for people who have the fatty liver disease to have high sugar and cholesterol, along with liver inflammation.
  2.  Get abdominal ultrasound with stomach palpation to check whether there are any changes of liver or liver enlargement at an abnormal level.
  3. Get Fibroscan to assess the stiffness and damages of tissues that have accumulated fat, as well as assessing the level of accumulated fat in the liver. 

Preventing Fatty Liver Disease

 Fatty liver is a health problem that can be avoided by taking good care of your health and body. Choose a healthier choice of food, avoid food with high fat and carbohydrate. If you are a regular drinker, you should lessen the drinking, while exercise regularly for weight control and stimulating your metabolism. All of these are not too hard to achieved to keep yourself from having a fatty liver.
